No prior hiking experience is required for our half-day hikes. If you can walk comfortably for 2-3 hours and are in reasonable health, you can enjoy guided hiking in Summit County. Full-day hikes require better fitness—you should be comfortable with sustained activity for 6-8 hours. We match trail difficulty to your group's abilities.

Summit County trails start at 9,000-10,000 feet elevation, which is significantly higher than sea level. You'll notice thinner air, faster heart rate, and increased fatigue compared to hiking at lower elevations. If you're visiting from sea level, we recommend arriving 1-2 days early to acclimatize. Start with a half-day hike before attempting full-day adventures. Proper hydration and pacing make altitude manageable for most people.

For half-day hikes, bring 1.5-2 liters of water, snacks, sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses, a hat, and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Layer clothing as temperatures can vary 20+ degrees between trailhead and summit. For full-day hikes, bring 2-3 liters of water, substantial lunch and snacks, rain jacket, warm layer (fleece or puffy jacket), and first aid basics. Your guide carries safety equipment and extra supplies.

Peak hiking season runs from June through September. July and August offer the warmest weather and spectacular wildflower displays, but afternoon thunderstorms are common—we start morning hikes early. September and early October provide stable weather, fall colors, and fewer crowds. Late May and early June have rushing waterfalls from snowmelt but high-elevation trails may still have snow. Winter hiking is possible on lower-elevation trails with proper equipment.

Yes! Our half-day hikes welcome children ages 6 and up on family-friendly trails. We adjust pace and distance for young hikers. Full-day hikes are better suited for kids 10+ who can handle longer distances and sustained effort. Private guided hikes allow us to customize the experience perfectly for families with children of various ages.

Our guides are experts at managing groups with varying fitness levels. We set a pace that works for everyone, take frequent breaks, and can adjust routes if needed. For groups with significant fitness differences, we recommend private guiding so we can customize the experience, or split into separate tours (half-day and full-day) that match each person's ability.

Yes, trekking poles are available upon request at no extra charge. Many hikers find poles helpful for balance, especially on descents, and they reduce stress on knees. If you have your own poles, feel free to bring them.

Summit County weather can change rapidly. If conditions are unsafe (lightning, severe storms), we'll reschedule your hike or recommend an alternative activity. Light rain doesn't stop us—we hike in drizzle with proper rain gear. Your guide monitors weather continuously and makes safety decisions based on current and forecasted conditions.
