14er mountaineering

14ers Near Summit County

Grays Peak (14,278') & Torreys Peak (14,275'): Colorado's most accessible 14ers, often climbed together. Standard route is a moderate hike with 3,000' elevation gain. Can be combined via Kelso Ridge for more technical challenge. Perfect first 14er choice.

Quandary Peak (14,271'): Summit County's most popular 14er, visible from Breckenridge. East Ridge route is straightforward hiking; east face offers steep scrambling. Excellent acclimatization objective.

Mount Lincoln, Cameron, Bross, Democrat (Decalibron): Four 14ers that can be climbed in one long day from the same trailhead. Moderate hiking with significant elevation gain. Not technical but physically demanding.

Beyond Summit County: We guide 14ers throughout Colorado including Longs Peak, Capitol Peak, the Maroon Bells, and technical routes requiring mountaineering skills.

What to Expect

Most 14er climbs start early (4-6am) to avoid afternoon thunderstorms and summit before noon. We maintain a sustainable pace—"slow is smooth, smooth is fast" at altitude. Frequent breaks allow hydration, snacks, and assessment of how everyone's handling the elevation.

Your guide monitors weather continuously, watches for altitude sickness symptoms, and makes turnaround decisions based on safety, not summit fever. Many unsuccessful 14er attempts result from poor pacing or ignoring weather—we manage both expertly.

Skill Levels & Prerequisites

Standard Route 14ers: Require good fitness but no technical skills. You should handle 8-12 mile hikes with 3,000-4,000' elevation gain. Previous hiking experience helpful but not required.

Technical 14ers: Some routes (Longs Peak's Keyhole, Capitol Peak, Pyramid Peak) require rock climbing skills. Discuss your experience with us—we'll recommend appropriate objectives.

Physical Preparation

14er climbs demand cardiovascular fitness and leg strength. Ideal preparation:

  • Train with loaded pack hiking (15-20 lbs)
  • Build to 8+ mile hikes with 2,000+ feet elevation gain
  • Arrive in Colorado 2-3 days before your climb if coming from sea level
  • Stay hydrated and consider our half-day hike for acclimatization

The single best thing I ever did for my skiing was call Rocky Mountain Guides. Rocky Mountain Guides is your go to for winter adventures. I completed avalanche training and have since completed many backcountry ski touring trips with them. Though my initial interest was backcountry skiing, I ended up learning more about ski technique than I ever thought possible. Looking forward to more winter ski touring trips with them and maybe some summer climbing next year!
