Why Choose Guided Ski Touring?

Safety: Our AIARE-certified guides assess snowpack, weather, and terrain daily. We make informed decisions about where to ski and when to retreat. Avalanche terrain requires expertise and our guides have it.

Access to Better Terrain: We know zones with the best snow quality, which aspects get sun, where wind loads dangerous slabs, and which zones offer safe skiing on any given day. Local knowledge makes the difference between okay days and epic ones.

Efficiency: Guides handle navigation, pace management, and transitions. You focus on skiing. No getting lost, no slow group members left behind, no terrain traps stumbled into unknowingly.

Education: Every tour includes continuous avalanche education. We explain what we're seeing in the snowpack, why we chose this route, and how we're managing risks. You'll learn while skiing.

No Need for Partners: Finding backcountry partners with matching schedules and skill levels is difficult. Guided tours mean you always have a qualified team.

Backcountry Skiing Terrain

Summit County offers incredible variety:

Beginner Touring: Low-angle tree skiing (20-25 degrees) in protected zones. Safe terrain for building skills and confidence. Typically 1,000-1,500' vertical per lap.

Intermediate Terrain: Rolling alpine bowls (25-35 degrees), moderate glades, longer tours with 2,000-3,000' vertical. Requires solid skiing ability and good fitness.

Advanced Skiing: Steep couloirs (35-45 degrees), exposed alpine faces, technical descents requiring strong skiing and good judgment. For experienced backcountry skiers only.

Splitboarding: All our tours accommodate splitboarders and skiers together. Your guide understands both disciplines and manages group dynamics well.

Typical Tour Day

Morning tours begin 7-8am with an avalanche and weather briefing. We discuss the day's objective, current conditions, and decision-making framework. Everyone checks beacon function before we start skinning.

On the skin track, we maintain efficient pace with regular breaks. Your guide points out terrain features, snowpack observations, and signs of avalanche activity. We're always assessing, always learning.

At the top, your guide evaluates the descent, including skiing order, spacing, safe zones. In avalanche terrain, we ski one at a time with your guide managing exposure. On safe terrain, the whole group descends together.

We typically ski 2-4 laps depending on terrain, fitness, and conditions. Tours run 4-6 hours total.

The single best thing I ever did for my skiing was call Rocky Mountain Guides. Rocky Mountain Guides is your go to for winter adventures. I completed avalanche training and have since completed many backcountry ski touring trips with them. Though my initial interest was backcountry skiing, I ended up learning more about ski technique than I ever thought possible. Looking forward to more winter ski touring trips with them and maybe some summer climbing next year!
